At the height of the civil rights movement in the 1960's, Dayton's community leaders addressed equal employment opportunities for all citizens, particularly underrepresented adults and urban youth. Representatives from numberous government agencies formed a collaborative network to implement affirmative actions initiatives.
Some of the organizations that participated in this endeavor were Wright-Patterson AFB, DESC, Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Portal Service and the U.S. Civil Services Commission. Eventually, other agencies supported the effort, such as the City of Dayton, Dayton Board of Education, Ohio Commission on Civil Rights, Montgomery County, Sinclair Community College and Wright State University.
Throughout DIEEOC's history, the primary objective has been to provide leadership in developing creative solutions to employment equity. DIEEOC's premiere project was develop0ing a partnership with area school counselors to facilitate the Summer Youth Employment Program that was held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
A very successful initiative included Project Commitment, where over 1,200 military and civilian supervisors received training in benchmarking the barriers, and collaborating on solutions, to achieving greater access to employment opportunities in federal and state agencies.
DIEEOC has been a long-standing source of pride and integrity for the greater Dayton community for over forty years. The organization has effectively responded to the ever-changing needs of both citizens and employers. DIEEOC's distinguished history serves as the foundation upon which to insure an inclusive and diverse workforce.
Each spring, usually the third Thursday in April, DIEEOC hosts an Annual Diversity Conference that is open to the community-at-large. Our goal is to provide Managers, Supervisors and EEO Officials with the latest tools to help them manage an ever changing workforce. We also provide employees with diversity training designed to increase the participants culture competency, interpersonal skills and help them manage their career development. Along with expert speakers, DIEEOC members are actively involved in planning the conference which offers cutting-edge diversity training on a wide range of issues.
